Saturday January 25th 2003, a date that will stay with me for a long time, the very first gig that Melksham Entertainment Group (forever more known as MEG) was ever to put on. The nerves were on edge, tickets had sold out before the end of December 02, we were expecting 330, we had booked 3 groups for the evening, all from the 60’s labled The Ready Steady Go Show, they were The Nashville Teens, The Four Pennies, and Love Affair, we were on tender hooks, would the bands turn up, what would they sound like, after all these were bands made famous with hits in the 60’s, we need not have worried, all the bands were here by half past four in the afternoon, and as for the sounds, all the reports from friends who had seen some of the groups at Butlin's proved to be true.
First on stage were the Nashville Teens, what a start, right from the off the dance floor was packed, the group responded hitting out with Google Eye, Little Bird, hit after hit from the 60’s 70’s and getting a standing ovation when they played Tobacco Road, what a fantastic performance, an hour and a quarter later as they left the stage the dance floor was still packed, the hall was buzzing, still two more amazing groups to come. Next up, Love Affair, “Oh” what a night this was turning out to be, we need not have put out any seats, no one was sitting down, the dance floor was a mass of heaving bodies, one great hit after another, Rainbow Valley was followed by A Day Without Love, to be followed by “Everlasting Love”, Melksham was transported back to the 1960’s, and we still had another group to go on, we were on a high, you could feel the electric in the air, this was going to take us weeks to come down, we were that excited.
Finally on came “The Four Pennies”, what an act to finish the show, once again hit followed hit, "Black Girl", "Until It’s Time for me to go", and of course “Juliet”, It was nearly midnight but it could have been any time no one was leaving, more more more was echoing around the hall, but unfortunately all good things must come to an end, but for us at MEG it was just a start, as they were all leaving the only question on every ones lips was “when is the next gig”, “who have we got next”, what a night, what a fantastic start for MEG, who ever we were going to get for our next gig, certainly had something to live up to, and “so did we”!
Saturday May 3rd 2003, our second gig, and once again we have managed to put together 3 fantastic groups for another packed house, The Cufflinks, Dave Berry & The Cruisers, and Edison Lighthouse, what a 60’ spectacular we had in store, First up on the stage was The Cufflinks with two off the original members of the group, and once again it seems that Melksham people can't get enough of this type of music, right from the first note the dance floor was packed, hits from the 50’s 60’s 70’s you name it, they played it, finishing with their smash hit on both sides of the Atlantic, the number one “Tracy”.
Next up, and here we freely admit we made a slight mistake, we put Dave Berry, what a star, there he stood surrounded in smoke with his one white glove on, showman to the last giving his fans what they craved for, thoughts that couldn’t get on the dance floor were stood on the chairs and tables, a real star was playing to his audience, “Long Distance Information Give Me Memphis Tennessee”, and then he was gone, it was then we learned that people had come all the way from Plymouth to see him perform, and they were not disappointed.
Finally on stage came Edison Lighthouse, great as they were, they had a fantastic act to follow and it was always going to be hard going, they never let us down, every one stayed dancing as the light’s came down to the sounds of “Love goes where my Rosemarie go’s” and another fantastic show ended, with comments ringing in our ears, “Stupendous", "Great", and "are the tickets on sale yet for the next one", we had a winning formula on our hands.
Saturday Sept 20th 2003, billed as another 60’s Spectacular, we had booked Cupids Inspiration and back by popular demand The Cufflinks and The Dakotas, three big groups again, to our dismay we were hit by two set backs, on the Wednesday before the gig we had a phone call from our agent to tell us that Cupid’s Inspiration had called it a day, disbanded, what a shock is an understatement, but as luck would have it, our agent had got another group to fill in at short notice, we knew how good they were because we had them here in January, it was the Four Pennies, this was ok but it caused us a problem in that we had already booked them for a return of our first show for January 04, our second bit of bad news was that we had just about sold 200 tickets, we hadn’t realised it was the Holiday period, we were going to suffer a big financial loss, we were going to learn a valuable lesson, but more to the point how was a small audience going to affect the groups, once again we need not have worried, all three groups were superb, but I have to say that the Four Pennies pulled out all the stops and put in the performance of the night, and that’s not to knock the performances of either The Cufflinks or The Dakotas, and when we asked the audience if they had a problem with The Four Pennies coming back yet again in January, not one dissenting voice could be heard, and as for the smaller crowd, the feeling was that it was better and gave more room for every one to dance. |
