Friday 5th October

Amateur Boxing returned to Melksham once again, as MEG once again strayed
from their normal habit of putting on 60’s Dances at the Assembly Hall.
Tonight the Assemble Hall would host 10 thrilling bouts of amateur Boxing in front
of ex World Welter-weight Champion J.H.Stracey who was MEG’s guest for the evenings entertainment, and a packed hall of paying guest who had paid for the pleasure of having Waiter service for a 3 course meal followed by mints and coffee and then to be richly entertained by some of the West finest Amateur Boxers.
Yet only 4 days before the event was to take place we were placed in a panic when for no reason one of the teams who were supplying the Boxers, the Army’s School
of Electrical Mechanical Engineers pulled out of the event, but its thanks to Walcot ABC of Swindon who rushed round contacting a few other Clubs that the night was saved. The Boxing side of the evening was started of by the youngsters, lads of about 15 upwards giving the audience a right tear up, this was much appreciated as could be told by the applause ringing around the Hall, with the winners being presented with their trophies from J.H.Stracey, likewise though who were runners up, and so it went right up to the last bout when we were introduced to 2 contenders who were ranked in the top 10 Amateur Boxers of the country, and as they started to mix it up in the ring you could see why, at the end of it all there was not one word of complaint about the night’s entertainment, only questions of when is the next one, and if there is to be a next one, and its as good as this one, MEG will have done its job, that is of Putting on good entertainment for the people of Melksham.
